Canadian cement and concrete industry applauds world’s historic commitment to concrete carbon neutrality

By: Cement Association of Canada

The following statement was issued by Michael McSweeney, President and CEO of the Cement Association of Canada, in response to news of the Global Cement and Concrete Industry’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050.

Today’s historic commitment by world leaders of cement and concrete producers to carbon neutrality is an important step forward in the fight against climate change. It signals to the world that it has an important global ally committed to a global solution to a global problem.

Canada’s cement and concrete industry is a proven leader in reducing emissions and has already taken swift action to create more sustainable and lower carbon solutions for Canada’s building industry.

We have improved our manufacturing energy efficiency by 20%, introduced lower carbon cements, are substituting fossil fuels with low or zero carbon fuels; and, perhaps most exciting, we are leading the way on carbon capture, utilization and storage, with several cement facilities being well advanced in the implementation of these technologies.

We will continue to make historic investments in exciting innovation and research in Canada to drive positive change leading to a carbon neutral future.
