Tandis que le ciment portland classique contient jusqu\u2019\u00e0 5 % de calcaire broy\u00e9, le ciment portland dit \u00ab au calcaire \u00bb en contient jusqu\u2019\u00e0 15 %, ce qui r\u00e9duit la quantit\u00e9 de clinker n\u00e9cessaire. Cette r\u00e9duction de clinker entra\u00eene une diminution de l\u2019\u00e9nergie n\u00e9cessaire au processus de fabrication et donc des \u00e9missions par tonne de CPC produite. Ainsi, la production du CPC entra\u00eene moins d\u2019\u00e9missions de CO2 que celle du ciment portland classique, tout en conservant des performances \u00e9quivalentes. Le ciment portland, principal liant utilis\u00e9 dans la production de b\u00e9ton, est responsable de pr\u00e8s de 90 % de l\u2019\u00e9nergie et du carbone intrins\u00e8ques du b\u00e9ton et de pr\u00e8s de 8 % des \u00e9missions anthropiques globales de CO2. Depuis 30 ans, l\u2019industrie du ciment, en particulier au Canada, investit dans de nouvelles installations de production qui ont consid\u00e9rablement r\u00e9duit sa consommation d\u2019\u00e9nergie et ses \u00e9missions de CO2. Le calcaire, mat\u00e9riau plus tendre, est broy\u00e9 plus finement que le clinker. En Europe, le ciment portland est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un produit haut de gamme, car les ciments \u00e0 faible teneur en clinker (c.-\u00e0-d. les ciments ayant un faible rapport clinker\/ciment) sont plus r\u00e9pandus qu\u2019en Am\u00e9rique du Nord. Les normes europ\u00e9ennes relatives au ciment autorisent une teneur en calcaire allant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 35 % dans le CPC, ce qui peut limiter l\u2019utilisation de ces m\u00e9langes de b\u00e9ton \u00e0 certaines applications \u00e0 mesure que la proportion de calcaire augmente.
